Genre: Picture Book, Animal friends

Summary
Polar bear is reading when a curious goose interrupts, pulls the book from his hands and starts reading himself. Goose keeps frustrating polar bear by interrupting his reading, his writing and even his thinking. When Goose returns with a snack and note that says Polar Bear is a splendid friend, Polar Bear realizes that Goose is also his splendid friend after all.
Analysis
The illustrations complement the text giving clues to the words and especially showing the emotions on Goose and Polar Bear’s faces. Children are sure to recognize these expressions from those of their sometimes-frustrated parents. With two main characters and a simple, familiar plot of friendship, and controlled language, this picture book will be enjoyable to read aloud to the youngest children.

Curriculum Connections
Language arts and art lessons are connected to this book. A discussion of pestering or annoying behavior can follow reading the story. In addition, a lesson on friendship is an appropriate discussion after reading the book.
Awards
Notable Children's Books
Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor
