Grannie and the Jumbie: A Caribbean Tale

Title: Grannie and the Jumbie: A Caribbean Tale
Author: Margaret M. Hurst
Illustrator: Margaret M. Hurst
Publisher: Laura Geringer Books
Copyright: 2001

Emanuel is tired of listening to his grannies tales of ghosts and spirits. He does not believe in them until one day an evil spirit threatens to take him away.

Comments:

Margaret Hurst utilizes an extensive use of word play throughout this story. Although written in the English language, this story uses a lot of slang and unfamiliar words that make it difficult to understand upon first reading it. Included in the back is a glossary to help with the stories comprehension. The illustrations are the most exceptional part of this book. They are created out of fabric sewn together, forming miraculously detailed pictures. A definite eye catching work of art.
