Book Talk
Eleven-year-old Jonas lives in a seemingly perfect world where every part of life is carefully planned to avoid fear or pain. Those who live in the community are expected to follow all the rules and choices made for them without question. Jonas is chosen to be the new Receiver of the ancient memories. As he discovers the power of strong emotions, he begins to understand how bland his life had been. His awakening to the potential joys and sufferings of life will lead Jonas to make the ultimate decision to change forever the lives of his fellow citizens.
Analysis
Lowry creates a community so realistic that readers can easily believe this scenario as possible. A world without pain, fear and other negative emotions is tremendously alluring. Some readers may feel compelled to excuse the rigid adherence to societal rules and the actual horror of their society because the elders seem to create such a “safe” environment for the community as a whole. Young people may be frustrated with the ambiguous final scene.
Curriculum Connections
This science fiction novel has many dimensions. In the language arts realm of science fiction, the story is an example of cause and effect with unforeseen consequences. Also, the language arts lesson on writing may allow readers to organize their thoughts and to write their own personal interpretation or alternate ending to the book. A science lesson on the physiology of the brain to explain how memory works may help some students understand how memory can be manipulated.
